This workshop will provide participants with an overview of school shooters and use case examples to illustrate the known characteristics of students on a pathway to violence. Shootervictim characteristics, dynamics, and behaviours will be examined within the context of a violence threat risk assessment framework. It will focus on:
- Overview of School Shooters
- Case Studies
- Myths about School Shooters
- Shooter/Victim Characteristics
- Dynamics of the Shooter
- Threat Assessment & Key Questions
- Intervention Strategies & Best Practices
- START (School Threat Assessment and Response Team: Los Angeles County Model)
The workshop will tackle the following objectives:
1. Participants will develop greater situational awareness about targeted school violence
2. Case studies will provide in depth understanding about shooter dynamics
3. Participants will learn about strategies designed to stop the path to violence
4. Participants will be provided with current best practices regarding assessment and response
