National Coded Terminologies - Foundations and Practice Workshop

Session One: SNOMED CT- AU

SNOMED CT (Systemized Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms) is an internationally preeminent clinical terminology and has been identified as the preferred national terminology for Australia, endorsed by the Australian Commonwealth, state and Territory Governments

This interactive workshop will cover:

Overview – its purpose, history, the requirements, the benefits, uses/users, structure, key reference documents, IHTSDO and key considerations in adopting SNOMED CT

The basics – post coordination, expressions, description logic, the interaction between terminology/information model, primary use and secondary use (re-use) of data, extensions, reference sets, history tracking and cross mapping

Robyn is the Clinical Terminology Lead within NEHTA where she is responsible for leading and coordinating the content team to maintain and develop SNOMED CT-AU Robyn has a background in Health Information Management and has worked in clinical classifications and data management as well as project management for early e-health projects before joining NEHTA in 2007
  Session Two: AMT

In 2006, NEHTA commenced development of AMT (Australian Medicines Terminology) to bridge the gap between the numerous drug reference files that are in use within Australia and to provide a common and consistent approach to the identification and naming of medicines

Overview - its purpose, history, and use cases

The basics - AMT concept model, interface with TGA and PBS, governance, AMTv3 development and implementation lessons learned

The workshop will be led by:

John Barned, Product Lead, NEHTA

Elizabeth has a clinical background and 15 years experience in the medical space. Originally trained as a hospital scientist, she has worked as clinical data manager and research assistant in clinical trials. Elizabeth has 10+ years experience in the pharmaceutical industry and prior to joining NEHTA and CTI she held the role of Managing Editor, Pacific Region – MIMS Australia and NZ (UMB Medica)

This involved: managing the content and strategic direction of medicines databases for use throughout Australia and New Zealand: data/database management, standardising and incorporating new clinical terminology sets, rescribing information and publishing print and digital (integrated data, online, PDA, Mobile) products. Elizabeth is the AMT Team Lead, CTI Content Team, NEHTA
