Mapping for sustainable futures - Transforming stakeholder engagement and profitability by using social and spatial sciences
  • Natural resource planning, including exploration, CSG and mine planning and area rehabilitation can proceed more productively and with less conflict and misunderstanding between stakeholders, if community/stakeholder knowledge can be accessed and used appropriately
  • The approach to community engagement in mapping is critical to ensure that knowledge mapped can be easily accessed and pragmatically exploited by all stakeholders and that differing perspectives can be understood
  • This research will help optimise the value of knowledge-mapping in CSG and mine planning by extending commonly used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to incorporate stakeholder dialogue on issues that have heretofore been largely ignored in the application of GIS to natural resource planning and community
